Turn Driftwood And Shells From Your Family Vacation Into A Lifelong Keepsake

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A family vacation to the beach isn't complete without kids bringing home lots of shells and sand along with them.

It can be a bit of a mess, but as CBS2's Cindy Hsu explained, it doesn't have to be -- there are creative ways to turn those shells into vacation keepsakes.

"You know, they go on the beach or they go in the woods and they get sticks and they get rocks," J Vanburen said, "And then they bring back these things, you don't know what the heck they are."

And after they gather dust for a while?

"Throw it away," Vanburen said.

Jeanette Zinno has been showing families creative ways to keep their keepsakes.

Shells can go in a jar.

"This is the easiest way to put them somewhere, where it's cute and really organized," she said.

On a tag you can write where you went and the year, and tie it around the jar.

Zinno also makes windchimes from driftwood and shells.

"First you have to drill holes in the top, as many strings as you want," she said, "You know the rope on top, slide it through, and add the shells."

If you use head bands or ponytail holders you can dress them up by gluing on shells and coral.

You can also make it into a bracelet or an anklet.

Naima decorated a plain headband with coral and shells.

"It feels good," she said.

You can also make rings. Just buy a plain ring at the craft store and glue on whatever you want. The same goes for earrings.
