Port Authority: Investigation Indicates No Shots Fired At JFK Airport

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey said a preliminary investigation indicates there were no shots fired at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Sunday night.

Hundreds of passengers were initially evacuated from Terminal 8 at JFK Airport after reports of shots fired. The NYPD told CBS2 that multiple calls started coming in around 8:34 p.m.

"Preliminary investigation does not indicate shots were fired at JFK. There are no injuries. At this time, no gun shells or other evidence of shots fired has been found," the Port Authority said in a statement.

The Port Authority added the terminal was "evacuated out of an abundance of caution."

Terminal 1 was also evacuated.

The NYPD said that both terminals will be re-opening.

"All terminals searched & cleared. Negative results. All affected terminals will resume operations shortly. No shots were fired," the NYPD tweeted.

CBS2's Steve Langford spoke to passengers who were forced to evacuate.

"The Port Authority started running around with all these guns and then they eventually just told us to get out," one female passenger said. 

A male passenger said, "A lot of people running, so that caused other people to run and basically everyone was kind of hiding behind objects in the terminal."

CBS2's Langford reported something happened that prompted a mass evacuation, but it's not known what happened yet.

The NYPD is assisting at the request of the Port Authority.

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a ground stop order at the airport.

All inbound flights to JFK have been delayed until further notice.
