Suspect Arrested In Brooklyn Rape, Robbery

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a rape and robbery in Brooklyn after an usual break in the case.

Michael Mann, 52, faces numerous charges including rape, robbery, sex abuse, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and others, police said.

Mann is accused of attacking a woman at knifepoint early Tuesday morning as she got off a J train in Bushwick. Police said he forced her into a dark corner next to a parking lot, stole her cash and phone and raped her.

The victim told investigators that he said, "Don't tell police or I will kill you." The suspect then gave her phone back, but kept the money and fled.

On Wednesday, police said Mann called 911 from a pay phone and asked for a ride to a train. When cops responded, police said they recognized his red sneakers from the victim's description.

"The officers realized this is the guy,"  NYPD Deputy Inspector Maximo Tolentino said. "They said, 'Listen, we'll give you a ride but we have a department policy that we don't let someone get into a car unless we know what someone has in their pockets.' They said, 'Do you have anything that can harm us?' And he said, 'I have a knife' and he pulled it out of his pocket."

Police said Mann is a level 3 sex offender. He has 14 prior arrests for robbery, drug possession, possession of stolen property and criminal mischief.

He also spent 17 years in prison for rape.
