CBS2 Exclusive: Suspects Posed As Cops During Bronx Home Invasion, Ambush

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Fake police have been accused of ambushing a man as he returned home.

Then, as they ransacked his apartment in the Bronx, another relative walked through the door.

The door of the West Farms apartment, which on Monday night was covered in black residue left by the real police who were dusting for prints.

CBS2's Valerie Castro spoke exclusively with 72-year-old Bernardino Guerrero, who said he was unlocking the door to his apartment around 11 p.m. on Sunday, when two men walked up behind him.

He said they pushed him inside the apartment, told him not to look at them, and then tied him up with zip ties.

Speaking Spanish, he told CBS2's Castro that the men identified themselves as police.

Guerrero said he was forced on the ground while one man ransacked a bedroom, searching through dresser drawers.

As that was happening, Guerrero's 29-year-old son Jason walked into the middle of the crime.

"It was so quick that he grabbed my arm and put his other hand on my mouth and 'Shhhh,' like that. I couldn't do nothing after that," Jason Guerrero said.

Jason said the suspects put duct tape over his mouth and tied his hands behind his back.

They forced him to the ground with one instruction.

"Just to cooperate, you know, (they said) they wasn't going to hurt me; they were just coming and looking for money," he said.

The suspects got away with about $4,000.

"My dad, pitiful, pitiful, it's an old man. It's ridiculous. He's 72," Jason said.

The family said investigators have been reviewing surveillance video from inside the building in hopes the suspects were caught on camera.

Police said the thieves dropped a fake police badge at the scene.
