Report: Cespedes Says He Doesn't Plan To Opt Out Of Mets Contract

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Yoenis Cespedes could become a free agent after this season if he so chooses. But apparently the Mets slugger is not thinking in that direction.

Yoenis told The Record on Wednesday that he doesn't intend to opt out of his three-year, $75 million contract this offseason.

In the meantime, he is focused on "helping the team win so we can hopefully make it to the playoffs," Cespedes told the newspaper through an interpreter.

The Mets made a trade-deadline deal with Detroit in July 2015 to bring Cespedes on board. He instantly gave the team's lagging offense the infusion it needed, batting .287 with 17 homers and 44 RBIs in 57 games en route to winning the National League pennant.

A free agent in the offseason, Cespedes rejected a reported five-year, $110 million offer from the Washington Nationals to return to the Mets, saying he was happy playing in New York.

Cespedes has two years, $47 million left on his current deal.

He is batting .295 this season with 25 home runs and 64 RBIs.
