2 Brooklyn Teens Found Safe After Getting Lost In Bear Mountain State Park
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two Brooklyn teenagers who went missing in Bear Mountain State Park have been found safe.
The 16-year-old yeshiva students were on a camping trip with about 200 other young people from Stoliner Camp, 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported.
Moshe Lederich and Yosef Rothman were hiking with a group of six people in the Rockland County park Thursday when state police said they got separated around 6:30 p.m., CBS2's Magdalena Doris reported.
The two stuck to a dirt path while four others took the forest to reach a road. The others were picked up by a passing car, but Lederich and Rothman were not.
Without cellphones and with one bottle of water each, the teens stayed up all night as New York state park rangers, state police and local volunteers scoured the mountain for them, Doris reported.
The search continued Friday morning on foot and in the air.
Just after 9:30 a.m., with tears in her eyes, Moshe's mother got the call she had been anxiously waiting for, Doris reported.
"It's absolutely a huge relief, and we thank God," Esther Lederich said.
"His voice sounds OK," she added then. "We don't have him yet, but we know that they found him."
The boys told police that on Thursday they came across a hiker who let them use a cellphone, but were unable to make a call, Papa reported.
The teens encountered another hiker Friday morning, who gave them some water and a cellphone that the boys used to call their parents. Emergency rescuers were dispatched, and the boys were found.
As of Friday afternoon, the teens were back at the sleep-away camp, in good spirits and good health, Doris reported.
