NYC Food Truck Lunch: Red Curry Chicken From Luckyim Thai

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

If you're in the mood for Thai food, one of the better options is Luckyim Thai. They started with a food truck a couple of years ago, and have since added a food cart downtown in the Financial District.

About a year and a half ago, we had had basil chicken and steamed dumplings, which were both quite good, especially the dumplings. This time, we decided to order red curry chicken, which cost $8. You can get it with shrimp instead for $9. The full menu is here for Luckyim Thai.

Our first thought upon emptying the bag was "this is a lot of food for $8", with the main dish and the white rice packaged separately. Of course, the amount of food doesn't matter if it's not tasty.

We dug into the red curry chicken and spooned it over the white rice. The dish was quite aromatic, and had plenty of sliced white meat chicken, bamboo shoots, cabbage, red and green bell peppers and basil. Everything was nice and fresh, including the veggies, which still had lots of body to them.

Once we tasted the sauce and the coconut milk that was in it, we put even more over the chicken and rice. The red curry sauce was spicy enough to just tickle our tongue, which was the perfect amount of heat.

This was an excellent (and filling) meal. On our last visit, we enjoyed their steamed dumplings (5 for $4) as an appetizer, but you don't really need an appetizer to be full from this lunch.

The Luckyim Thai food truck makes the rounds of the usual food truck spots in midtown, and their cart is downtown. Best to check their Twitter here, their Facebook here, or their website here for locations and schedule.
