Man, 24, Dead After Shooting In Old Mill Basin, Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- There was an uproar in a Brooklyn neighborhood following a shooting that left a man dead Thursday afternoon.

Gunshots are the last thing anyone would think they'd hear on one very quiet street in Old Mill Basin, but someone opened fire on the steps outside a home, CBS2's Sonia Rincon reported. A couple of hours later, another dramatic scene unfolded.

Bullets shattered the door and window at a house on Brooklyn's East 56th Street at around 12:40 p.m., leaving a 24-year old man in critical condition. The man, identified as Kendell Walcott of Brooklyn, was later pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital Center.

The shooting also left a second man with a minor injury to his hand.

As police investigated, an outburst led to the man with the minor injury and another in handcuffs.

CBS2's camera was recording as both men were quickly taken in for questioning. Neighbors said one man lives at the home. Police sources told CBS2 he's being questioned as a possible suspect, but the motive is still unclear.

Other residents of the home were also taken to the police station and neighbors are trying to figure out why this happened, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.

"A couple shots went off, I was actually in the kitchen, I thought it was like construction work. Obviously it wasn't construction. So it's definitely sad to see something like that around this neighborhood. Nothing crazy like that usually happens," neighbor Blaine Brown said.

Portia Mumford said the sound, coming from the other side of her yard, was very scary for her husband and children.

"My husband is a Vietnam vet and when he heard the shots, he kept crying.... you know... just crying," she said, adding that she's worried about the safety of her children.

Police are questioning the people who were taken in handcuffs, but so far no one is charged and no gun has been found. Police aren't saying what the dispute may have been about and neighbors don't want to speculate.
