Boy, Grandfather Rescued After Jet Ski Crashes Into Long Island Marsh

LAWRENCE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork)-- Two people were rescued after a jet ski crashed into a marsh area in Long Island Friday afternoon.

A 13-year-old and his 68-year-old grandfather were riding the jet ski when it ran aground, officials told CBS2. The teenager walked for help and called to a golfer at the Rockaway Golf Club for assistance who then called 911.

Nassau County police dispatched boats and aviation as well as the Hempstead Bay Constables, who also launched a boat and notified the New York Police Department.

NYPD picked up the child around 4:45 p.m. and authorities rescued his grandfather. Both were taken to the Nassau Marine Unit without injuries.

"Hempstead's Bay Constables, along with the New York City Police Department, successfully completed the rescue of two individuals who became stranded near Macy Channel in the West Bay this afternoon. The two males were aboard a personal watercraft that took on water and sank. The rescued pilot and passenger were returned to shore and appeared to be in good condition," Town of Hempstead Spokesperson Mike Deery said.
