California Woman Delivers Surprise Baby On Labor Day

BURBANK, Calif. (CBSNewYork/CBSLA.com) -- A California couple had a big surprise on Labor Day – with another member joining their family as a complete surprise.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, Jeff Parungoa and his wife, Jennifer Favela, got a wake-up call they did not plan for on Monday. Their baby boy made his big debut just after 4 a.m. Monday.

But Favela said she had no idea she was pregnant at all.

"Shocked is an understatement," Favela said. "I woke up in the middle of the night just thinking I had a stomachache."

One could only image her surprise when her water broke.

Favela, 35, is already the mom of a 13-year-old and a 7-year-old. She said this time around, she didn't have morning sickness and had what she thought were light periods.

But there was one telltale sign her husband delicately brought up.

"I'm going to be a mean person right now, but last week I told her: 'Hey, we need to do something, man. You're gaining weight,'" Parungoa said.

Favela said she noticed she was gaining weight too. But she didn't think a baby was the reason.

"Just stress of life like; other things that I'm going through, that I didn't, like yeah, I knew I was gaining weight but I just thought other things that I'm worried about, not a kid," Favela said.

But mom and dad didn't have much time to talk it over. Their new baby was born in their hallway.

Parungoa made the delivery with the help of emergency dispatchers on the phone, and what he remembered from the birth of his older kids.

"The operator goes, 'Do you see anything?' I go, I think I see something,' and right when I said that I go, 'Oh yeah, I see something,'" he said.

Their Facebook page was full of messages of congratulations a day later from equally surprised friends and family.

One post read, "Wait, you guys didn't know you were pregnant?" And that has been the tone of many conversations.

"I said, 'Hey dude, I just delivered a baby and he's all, 'Whose baby?'" Parungoa said. "I go, 'Jen just had a baby.' He's like, 'Man, shut up!'"

"I actually work for an insurance company, so that's going to be an interesting phone call when I have to call my boss," Favela added.

The shocked parents were trying to figure out a name for their surprise son on Tuesday.

The family said they are also scrambling to get all the things they need for a new baby, including a car seat to take him home from the hospital.
