Some NJ Schools Close Early Amid Hazy, Hot And Humid Conditions

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Some schools were subject to early dismissals Friday amid hazy, humid conditions.

The Sayreville, New Brunswick and Keyport school districts all let their students out early Friday. In New Brunswick, the order only applied to students at Lincoln Elementary School, Livingston Elementary School and Roosevelt Elementary School because those schools do not have air conditioning.

Trenton schools also closed early because of the heat.

In Sayreville, little scholars rolled out of school two hours early, with highs in the 90s and a heat advisory in effect, CBS2's Vanessa Murdock reported. Sayreville Schools Supt. Richard Labbe said shutting down school early was a matter of safety.

"The second floors of our buildings yesterday were well above 90 degrees," Labbe said.

At 6:15 a.m. Friday, a teacher reported a classroom temperature to be 89 degrees.

"By early afternoon, the temperatures on our second floors could be well over 100 degrees – which is far too unsafe for our students and staff," Labbe said.

Parents also said the heat made for an unsafe situation.

"I think it's really important to send them home when it's so hot," said parent Stacey Rathbun. "They can't concentrate, if they can't concentrate, there's really no sense in them being here."

"It would have been easier if they got out on time," added Matthew Leon of Parsippany. But he added that closing early was the right move "if there's a possibility the children could have heat exhaustion or other problems."

And the children said they couldn't take it.

"It's ridiculous weather because it's so hot out," said Mila Leon, 8.

"My classroom doesn't have air conditioning, so all of us we were sweating, and we all wanted to get water," said Savanna McInttire, 8.

Dylan Picciallo, also 8, said he was one of the lucky ones – his classroom was "cool."

But high schoolers said as early as noon, it already felt like a sauna inside.

"It brutal inside," said Michael Gallo.

"It's real hot in there, so I had to just wipe off my sweat real quick," said Xavier Townes, 17.

Along the Hoboken waterfront, it was not nearly as sweaty. A nice breeze off the water made the conditions tolerable and even likable.

"I like this weather all year round," said Tonia McClintock of Jersey City.

But a few blocks inland, the blacktop baked, and an umbrella was necessary for shade. The unseasonable warmth gets mixed reviews.

"Keep on with the heat - I love it," said Signlida Gallagher of Hoboken.

"A little oppressive, although the skies are nice and blue," said William Livingston of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.

The conditions will persist through the first half of you weekend. A heat advisory for central and southern New Jersey remains in effect until 7 p.m. Saturday.

In some spots, heat indices will rise above the century mark.
