Ferry Riders Polled On Possible New Names For Staten Island Yankees

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The Staten Island Yankees minor league baseball team, which has asked the public to help it find a new name, has narrowed down the choices to five monikers that you might not believe.

The finalists are the Bridge Trolls, Heroes, Killer Bees, Pizza Rats and Rock Pigeons.

CBS2’s Steve Overmyer took an informal poll on the Staten Island Ferry to see which one people liked best.

“It’s between the Bridge Trolls and the Pizza Rats,” one girl said.

“I’m going with Bridge Trolls,” a man said.

“I would have thought if it was Bridge Tolls, it totally would have been Staten Island,” Overmyer said. “Right? They should call themselves the Bridge Tolls.”

One boy said he liked the Heroes “because it’s more funner.”

“Pizza Rats sound like a baseball team,” one man said.

“The Pizza Rat emcompasses New York City,” another man said.

“It does!” Overmyer replied. “I mean, seriously, if you think about it, if you’ve seen the video, you’ve got pizza, a rat and a subway — that’s like the holy trinity of New York City.”

“You want to know the truth? I don’t like any of them,” one man said. “Know why I don’t like any of them? They’re the Yankees, man. They’ve got a class name — Yankees.”

The final results from Overmyer’s poll were:
Killer Bees 39%
Pizza Rats 22%
Heroes 21%
Bridge Trolls 11%
Rock Pigeons 4%

The Killer Bees name is a nod to the Staten Island group the Wu-Tang Clan,
