Suspicious Device Found On Train Tracks In Elizabeth

ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A suspicious device was found on the Northeast Corridor train tracks in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Sunday night.

The suspicious item was found in the area of North Broad and Westfield Avenue.

Mayor Chris Bollwage said the Union County Bomb Squad determined it could be a bomb. The FBI is also on scene.

Bollwage said two scavengers found the package while going through the trash. When pulling it apart, they found wires attached to the package. They then left the package under the train tracks and ran to a police station to report what they found.

Area businesses have reportedly been ordered to shut down and evacuate as bomb technicians have a robot checking the suspicious device.

A hazmat team has also been requested to the scene.

Police are evacuating and securing the area around the train line.

Service has been temporarily suspended between Newark Airport and Elizabeth stations in both directions.

This comes after separate bombings in New York City and Seaside Park, New Jersey. It is not known if this incident is connected to the other two.
