Man Slashed In Face, Chest On Uptown D Train Near Bryant Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A man was slashed on a subway train in Midtown Thursday morning.

The 38-year-old man was attacked on a northbound D train at around 10:18 a.m., police said.  

Emergency responders rushed to the 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue subway station to treat the victim who is listed in stable condition. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital.

"He was bleeding everywhere," said witness Alex Sastoque.

The victim and suspect boarded the train at West 4th Street just after 10 a.m. and were engaged in an argument. They did not know each other, authorities told CBS2's Dave Carlin.

At one point the suspect said, "What are you looking at," Carlin reported.

As the train pulled into the Bryant Park station the suspect pulled out a boxcutter and slashed the victim on his face chest and hands.

"One the face, the hands, and the chest area," NYPD Assistant Transit Chief Vincent Coogan said.

The suspect also shredded the victim's clothing while cutting him repeatedly.

"The victim did get off the train, followed the perpetrator who slashed him up to the street area where he got away," Coogan told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa.

The suspect fled into Bryant Park, and police were searching for him.

Police said the reason the injured victim was on the sidewalk is because he chased the attacker and tried to catch him.

Coogan said investigators were also reviewing video and talking to witnesses.

"He blended into the crowd and got away," Coogan said.

Irene Malonowski told 1010 WINS' Papa that she saw the victim on the street.

"He looked like he was okay, but the blood was profusely dripping off his chest and his face," she said.

There were delays on the A, B, C and D trains after the stabbing due to the investigation, but those delays are over.

Police described the suspect as a heavy-set black male, in his upper 30s or early 40s and wore black.
