City Halfway To Fundraising Goal For Universal Computer Science Classes
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Hot on the heels of full day pre-k for all comes CS4All -- computer science classes and coding taught in all high schools.
"Just to put it in perspective, before this school year fewer than 5 percent of our public school kids learned computer science," Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
On Thursday, the mayor announced the initiative had raised $20-million in private funding, the halfway mark of the campaign's $40-million goal.
Mayor de Blasio said there will also be schools specializing in computer sciences with 10 percent of all middle and high schools offering advanced programs, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.
De Blasio first announced plans for the program last year with a target completion date of 2025.
Comptroller Scott Stringer has complained about the 10 year timetable for rollout.
"People who don't run things often have simplistic analysis of the reality," Mayor de Blasio said.
There has been $81-million earmarked for teacher training and equipment as well, half of that will come from the private sector.
