New York Times Editorial Board Calls Trump 'Worst Nominee' In Modern American History

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York Times has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president.

The paper made the announcement in a letter penned by their editorial board on Saturday morning.

In endorsing Clinton, the paper also slammed GOP candidate Donald Trump as "the worst nominee put forward by a major party in modern American history."

In a typical election year, the board said, they would compare the candidates on the issues, but went on to say that doing so would be "an empty exercise."

The paper cited Clinton for having, "a record of service and a raft of pragmatic ideas" while adding that Trump, "discloses nothing concrete about himself or his plans while promising the moon and offering the stars on layaway."

The Times touted Clinton's credentials saying she has the capacity to rise to the country's challenges.

"The next president will take office with bigoted, tribalist movements and their leaders on the march. In the Middle East and across Asia, in Russia and Eastern Europe, even in Britain and the United States, war, terrorism and the pressures of globalization are eroding democratic values, fraying alliances and challenging the ideals of tolerance and charity."

In throwing their support behind the Democratic nominee, the paper said they were looking to reach out to undecided voters who were, "reluctant to vote for a Democrat, or for another Clinton, or for a candidate who might appear, on the surface, not to offer change from an establishment that seems indifferent and a political system that seems broken."

The Times editorial board added that as this year's campaign brought attention to the anger and despair of middle and lower class Americans, they believed Clinton was best qualified to ease burdens caused by 'recession, technological change, foreign competition, and war.'

"Over 40 years in public life, Hillary Clinton has studied these forces and weighed responses to these problems. Our endorsement is rooted in respect for her intellect, experience, toughness and courage over a career of almost continuous public service, often as the first or only woman in the arena."

They added that a subsequent editorial would address what they see as Trump's shortcomings.

Trump has threatened to bring Gennifer Flowers to the first debate, and seat her next to businessman Mark Cuban -- a Clinton guest.

As CBS News reported, Flowers is an ex-model who made headlines after having a relationship with Bill Clinton.

Trump issued the warning on Twitter, after Clinton extended the invitation to Cuban.
