Reports: LAPD Actively Investigating Rape Allegation Against Derrick Rose

LOS ANGELES (CBSNewYork) -- Knicks point guard Derrick Rose is the subject of a criminal rape investigation in Los Angeles, according to multiple reports.

According to the reports, the LAPD confirmed in a letter to Rose's accuser that there is an active investigation into the August 2013 incident in which the 30-year-old woman claims the former MVP and two of his friends raped her while she was incapacitated after a night of drinking.

Rose and the others, who have not been charged, have denied the claims and say the sex was consensual.

The alleged victim filed a $21 million lawsuit against Rose last year. That civil trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 4, the same day as the Knicks' preseason opener at Houston. That day will also be Rose's 28th birthday.

The woman did not file a police report until two years after the alleged rape, TMZ reported. She told the New York Daily News she desperately wants to remain anonymous and feared going to the cops would reveal her identity.

The letter from the LAPD said the alleged victim "exercised her right to confidentiality." A judge, however, ruled last week that she cannot remain anonymous during the civil trial.

CBS2's Steve Overmyer reported Rose addressed questions about the allegations as the Knicks introduced their new guard on media day. He said his legal team is handling everything.

"I've been handling it pretty good, I think. I really haven't been thinking about it. I've been thinking about the team more than anything, like how I'm going to gel with the team," Rose said.

Rose's lawyers are painting this as an attempt for the victim to extort millions. Rose has said the woman, a former girlfriend, invited the men to her apartment and buzzed them through security.

Detective Nadine Hernandez told ESPN the investigation began less than a year ago, but said the exact date of when the complaint was filed is under seal. Hernandez said police have not interviewed Rose, but an "offer is on the table."

Rose told reporters Monday that he isn't worried about the civil trial because he feels he "didn't do anything wrong."

Rose said he is instead focused on his first season with the Knicks, who acquired him from the Chicago Bulls in a June trade. His first practice with the team will be Tuesday.

Rose added that he hadn't heard anything about a possibility of criminal charges being brought.
