Gov. Cuomo Unveils Renderings Of New Penn Station-Moynihan Train Hall Complex

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Big changes are coming to Penn Station.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled the renderings Tuesday for a unified Penn Station complex that includes the Farley Post Office, which will be redeveloped into the Moynihan Train Hall.

"New York's tomorrow depends on what we do today, and the new Moynihan Train Hall will be a world-class 21st century transportation hub," Cuomo said. He called the current Penn Station "overcrowded, decrepit, and claustrophobic."

Cuomo said the new train hall will have more space than Grand Central's main concourse and will accommodate both the LIRR and Amtrak ticketing and waiting areas. There will also be plenty of retail and dining options, Cuomo said.

"This is not a plan - this is what's going to happen," Cuomo said. "People are to walk through this station and recognize that this is New York."

Three contractors have been picked to work on the project: Skanska AB, Vornado Realty LP and Related Companies.

The plans include moving the Amtrak waiting area across the street to the old Farley Post Office, as well as redeveloping the Long Island Rail Road concourses and existing Penn Station. The A, C, E and 1, 2, 3 subway stations at 34th Street will also be redesigned.

The Farley Building renovation will cost around $1.6 billion, Cuomo said. In January, the state projected the overall project including Penn Station overhaul will cost a total of around $3 billion. Private developers are expected to pay a sizeable amount of the total in exchange for commercial rights.
