Girardi: ‘Realistic’ Youngsters Can Lead Yankees To Postseason Next Year

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)Manager Joe Girardi believes the New York Yankees could be back in the postseason next year.

Speaking to WFAN’s Mike Francesa on Monday, Girardi believes if his young players continue to develop, he doesn’t see a reason why the Yankees shouldn’t be playing in October in 2017.

“If our kids can play at a level that’s really high, I think it’s really realistic,” Girardi said, adding that the Boston Red Sox have been led by young players like Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Xander Bogaerts.

On top of Gary Sanchez, Aaron Judge and Greg Bird, Girardi said there could be some more players coming through next season.

“I know there’s more coming and that’s probably even the more exciting part. There’s some really exciting players in our minor league system,” Girardi said.

The Yankees finished five games out of a Wild Card spot.
