The Goethals Bridge will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported. Lane diversions and delays will remain in place through Monday afternoon.

Contractors have to demolish an old Conrail freight train bridge and rebuilt it in one weekend to make room for expanded approaches to the new Goethals Bridge.

"This project is a very complex and difficult operation," Roger Prince, Port Authority General Manager of Staten Island Bridges, said.

According to Prince, peak delays could add up to 30 minutes to commutes.

"During the course of this weekend, both the outer bridge and the Bayonne Bridge will be maintained fully open throughout with no construction operations or other maintenance activities," Prince said.
