NJ Mother Carjacked In Her Own Driveway By Teen With Rifle, Police Say

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A teen armed with a rifle carjacked a woman at gunpoint Friday morning, Hillside Police said.

The incident began at around 8 a.m. on Wolf Place in Hillside.

Lilian Makori was in her driveway preparing to take her children to school when a 15-year-old carjacked her Toyota Highlander and drove off with two 13-year-olds, police said.

"[The rifle was] on me and if he was to shoot me, he'd shoot my head or my upper body," she told CBS2's Valerie Castro. "I screamed, I just threw my stuff up because he was saying, 'gimme, gimme.' I don't know what he wants and I have nothing else to give him."

Makori said she's grateful her own children weren't inside of the SUV when it was stolen.

"He would have crashed with my kids. But unfortunately, he crashed into a woman and her child, which is sad," she said.

At around 2 p.m., Hillside Police spotted the car.

Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the teens drove off, police said.

That's when the suspects crashed into another car at Bergen Street and Pomona Avenue in Newark. The other vehicle was occupied by a woman with her infant daughter, who are both expected to be OK.

Neighbors told CBS2's Valerie Castro that they heard the collision and came outside to see the victims.

"It sounded like an explosion," Joseph Sanders said.

The crash happened in Sanders' front yard.

"The baby, oddly enough, was in good shape. Thank god for that car seat," he said. "The mother - she looked like she was really hurt."

"Three-month-old baby, the mother was badly injured, and there was a 13-year-old boy laying on the lawn, and they was working on him," Towana Gisbon said.

One of the 13-year-old suspects is in critical condition. The other two were being questioned at the police station.

Charges have not yet been announced.
