How To Kick Your Impulse Shopping Habit

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — If you love to shop and your closet is full of clothes that you have never worn, you are not alone.

“It’s ridiculous because I really have a shopping problem, it’s like an addiction,” shopper Porschia Nicholson told CBS2’s Cindy Hsu.

Diane Storoni can relate.

“I’ll see something and I’ll just buy it,” she said. “And it will just stay in the closet with the tag on.”

Moikgantsi Kgama says she ends up wasting money, when she shops for the size she wants to be.

“Sometimes I shop for the smaller me and she doesn’t show up, and so her clothes are in my closet,” she said.

Wardrobe expert Colleen Fitzpatrick says that has to change.

“Only buy things that fit you now. Because you’re looking at the fantasy of either what your weight is going to be or what your life may be,” she told Hsu.

So buy for the lifestyle you live, not the fantasy you see in magazines.

“If you live in the country, don’t get caught up in the fantasy of what a cocktail party would be at the Ritz or the Plaza,” she said.

Fitzpatrick says only buy quality clothes that you find fabulous.

“Really buy the things that you love. Quality over quantity every time will get you the best value because you’re going to wear it a lot and get your money’s worth,” she said.

Before you even start shopping, clear out your closet, so you know what you have and what you need.

Moikgantzi is well on her way.

“Right now I’m just trying to get rid of anything that I haven’t worn in a year, and I’m going to get things that are my size because I just want to look cute every day,” Kgama said.

Experts also say if you shop online, you risk ordering clothes that don’t fit or the quality is questionable. So it’s best to go to the store, try on the clothes, then go on-line to find the best deal.
