Whittier detectives have not said if they’re investigating the death as a homicide or suicide. However, The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that it was a suspected suicide.

“At this time, there are no signs of foul play, and this incident is being investigated as a suicide,” Whittier police told the newspaper. “However, this is an ongoing investigation.”

Preciado said Hernandez was a detective in the Robbery-Homicide Division Special Assault Section.

Hernandez wrote a letter last month to Rose’s accuser assuring her the LAPD is actively investigating the case for possible charges against the former NBA MVP and two of his friends. Hernandez also confirmed the investigation to media outlets.
