‘Pedals’ The Bear That Walked Upright Due To Injured Paws Reportedly Shot Dead

WEST MILFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Pedals, an injured black bear that walked upright and became a social media sensation, was shot dead by a hunter, according to a report.

Pedals was reportedly shot by a bow hunter Monday, the first day of New Jersey’s bow hunt for black bears.

The bear first gained fame after it was spotted ambling around neighborhoods and caught in videos that were posted on social media and played on national television. Experts say the bear apparently has some sort of leg or paw injury that won’t allow it to spend much time on all fours.

Sabrina Pugsley, who maintains a Facebook page about Pedals, told the Bergen Record that word of Pedals being killed started surfacing Wednesday after a hunter brought in a bear’s carcass to the Green Pond check station.

New Jersey’s Division of Fish and Wildlife said it had no way of telling whether Pedals was killed or not.

Pugsley told the Record she believed the hunter’s claim, since Pedals had a missing right paw and a mangled left one.

At least 412 bears have been killed in the hunt, which ends Saturday.

what a total jerk to kill an injured bear who was not hurting anyone. I hope Karma bites him so hard he does not know what is happening. People like him disgust me. It is sad enough to kill them at all. But an injured bear who did not even have a chance. SHAME ON YOU> THE PERSON WHO DID THIS HAS NO HEART OR SOUL>

  3. Sad World says:

Very sporting. The hunter should be proud.

OMG. I loved this brave bear, have followed his story for the 2 yrs he was seen. Fish & Game has never impressed me. They “see many crippled bears missing limbs” WHAT A BLATANT LIE This bear had a nation rooting for him, where was Fish & Game’s compassion towards a crippled animal.Just because he could get food from scrounging in garbage cans did not mean he was healthy. I am sure he must have been somewhat malnourised. Why didn’t they at least dart him once to examine him to be sure he was okay that would have helped reassure the thousands pf people who were worried about him.And the hunter, he couldn’t see he was putting an arrow into a crippled gentle bear?!?!? And he GLOATED ABOUT IT. We want people to have compassion for all animals but this was allowed? the fish & Game & this cruel hunter should suffer from guilt all the rest of their lives. So very, very sad.

    1. The poor baby had crippled limbs from the legal wildlife torture that is their traps! Leg hold traps are banned in the UK, Europe, New Zealand… because they are animal abuse. It is shameful on so many levels. Poor baby. I really hope the guy that was OK with her screams as the arrow hit her, is shown the same compassion some day. Yes, I love animals much more than those who enjoy causing them fear and pain.
