NYPD Officers Save 14-Month-Old Girl In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Two NYPD officers helped save a 14-month-old girl’s life in the Bronx on Friday night.

Officers Felix Baez and Giovanni Laguna were patrolling the area near 138 Street and Willis Avenue in Mott Haven around 8:30 p.m. when they saw a young woman running down the street.

“We saw she was holding a baby and she was yelling ‘help me, help me, help my baby,'” Baez said.

Liliana Cano’s daughter, Ashley, was unresponsive and turning blue.

“[Ashley] was sleeping and then all of a sudden, she started reacting in a weird way,” Ashley’s brother Emmanuel said.

Laguna placed the girl on the ground and started performing CPR.

“The training kicked in, and the one thing I was telling myself was just keep calm, keep calm, you know as I was working on her,” he said.

Moments later, Ashley opened her eyes and regained a faint pulse.

The officers drove Liliana and Ashley to Lincoln Hospital where she was evaluated and released.

“She wants to be so grateful to the officers for helping her keep her alive. Without them her daughter wouldn’t be alive,” Emmanuel said, speaking for his mother.

“Knowing that we could provide a mother and daughter another shot, another day of life, it feels great,” Baez said.

Job well done by Officers Baez and Laguna. Glad they were able to render aid to the young girl. Dad was NYPD for 30+ years. I have worked in health care for 40 yrs., and have performed CPR out in the field. You sometimes will find someone willing to help when it is CPR on an adult, but people shy away more times than not when it is a child. Every parent should be required to be certified in CPR before a child is discharged from the hospital. Good luck and good health to the little one.
