NYPD: Man Shot 6 Times In Chelsea, 3 Arrested Following Police Chase
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Three people are in custody following a shooting in Chelsea that left one man in critical condition early Sunday morning.
Investigators say a plainclothes officer heard several shots ring out on 6th Avenue and West 22nd Street just before 1 a.m., CBS2 reported.
One man was shot six times in the torso, leg and groin, police said.
"Looking down the street the officers observed a black Mercedes-Benz sedan, double parked, and a male running toward the vehicle from the direction where the shots were heard," NYPD Captain Steven Spitarro said.
Police chased the black Mercedes-Benz for several blocks before it crashed into an anti-crime squad car after making a turn on 19th Street, police said.
"It's not every day that stuff like this happens, but when it does, we're ready," one officer who responded to the scene said.
Police say officers found a silver and black semi-automatic handgun inside the vehicle.
Ramel Harkless, 38, Joseph Saunders, 43, and Barry Wiles, all of Brooklyn were taken into custody without incident, police said. All three are facing weapons charges.
Police don't think the shooting was random.
The victim was rushed into surgery at Bellevue Hospital in critical, but stable, condition. Sources told 1010 WINS the victim may have gotten into an argument with his attackers at a nearby party before the shooting.
Charges against the suspects are pending.
