Woman Dies After Being Hit, Dragged By Bus In Lower Manhattan

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was hit and killed by a bus in Lower Manhattan on Friday evening.

The accident happened at Trinity Place and Exchange Alley shortly after 5:30 p.m., just minutes ago the bus was towed from the scene.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, a gruesome investigation was underway after the woman was hit and dragged.

Police sources said the woman was first hit near the Staten Island Ferry Terminal near State and Water Streets, and then dragged several blocks to Trinity Place and Edgar Street.

The QM7 bus traveled nearly half a mile before people began to flag the driver down as they realized what was happening.

Michelle and Andrew Bass walked by the scene earlier in the day.

"People were just looking like, I think everyone thought it was fake," Michelle said.

They saw the bus stopped on Trinity Place, and said the driver was outside of the bus and checking underneath.

"Right in front of the bus, looking under the wheels," Andrew said.

The driver told them the body wasn't real.

"And then he got back on the bus and started driving, and then the cop stopped him and we just kept walking," Andrew said, "The cop banged on the bus and told him to stop, and he came off and said it's a prank, it's a prank."

The couple left stunned by what they witnessed.

The driver was immediately taken to Beth Israel hospital for an evaluation, no charges have been filed, but police said it is an ongoing investigation.
