Holiday Season Shopping: Best Deals In November

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) --  Is it too soon to start your holiday shopping? Maybe now is the perfect time.

According to the National Retail Foundation, Americans plan to spend an average of $935 on holiday shopping this year.

CBS2's Alex Denis teamed up with Trae Bodge, a shopping expert from shopping search engine Yroo, to offer up some money-saving tips this season.

Sale signs are everywhere, but don't be deceived -- not every deal is as good as it seems.

"There are some things the will be well-priced now, and some things that will be better priced if you wait until December," Bodge said.

Here's what you should buy right now:

Candy: Halloween may be over, but the leftover candy is still good. Stock up on deeply discounted treats, freeze them, and bake them into holiday goodies.

Appliances: November yields twice as many sales on large appliances than any other time of the year, with markdowns up to 60 percent off, Bodge says.

"Now especially, those new models are coming, the retailers can't do anything about it," Bodge said. "So they're really trying to clear that space."

Black Friday and Cyber Monday will always offer great deals on name brands, but winter apparel, electronics, cookware and beauty products tend to be discounted the most.

With so many sales to choose from, Bodge says now is the time to be picky.

"What I would look for are deals 40 percent or more," Bodges said.

And don't forget to search for additional promo codes and coupons online.

The National Retail Federation predicts a rush in sales after Election Day, with shopping commercials taking the place of political ads.
