De Blasio Praises NYPD As City Sets Compstat Safety Record For Month Of October

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD has continued to make the city safer.

As 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported, crime stats were at their lowest for any October since the Compstat era began in 1995.

"We're not gonna stop until we make this city as safe as it can possibly be, but we also have to celebrate when the good work of the NYPD means people are alive and are walking the streets when they might not have been otherwise," Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

Six out of seven major crime categories are down this October compared to last, with rape as the only exception.

Another stubborn area has been elderly crime.

"I review each case that comes in, we put out video each night of persons committing crimes against the elderly and will continue to do so," Chief of Detectives, Robert Boyce said.
