'Oh That's Creepy,' Decades Old Remains Stolen From Queens Cemetery On Halloween Night

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Remains were stolen from a Queens cemetery on Halloween night, but was it a horrible prank, or something more sinister?

As CBS2's Alice Gainer reported, Acacia Cemetery and adjacent Bayside Cemetery span 12 acres with about 35,000 graves, but now two of those in Acacia are empty.

"Oh that's creepy," Bill Robinson said.

Police said on Halloween night someone stole a full skeleton and other remains out of two separate crypts in a mausoleum.

Tattered clothing was left behind.

"That's either a really poorly planned prank, or that's creepy," Eddie Rosario said. "Maybe somebody's doing some kind of wooooh kinda stuff."

"Let me tell you something this is a crazy world, what's going on now, I don't understand," Gilda Gillen added.

Police confirmed the remains belonged to Lewis Hambro and Marilan Hollan. Both died in 1928, so they had been in their respective crypts for 88 years.

A groundskeeper told police someone removed plywood from the window of the mausoleum to gain entry.

The gates are all locked up and there's barbed wire surrounding most of the cemetery.

There's also multiple signs letting people know there are cameras monitoring the place, but so far no word on any video of the theft.

The cemetery had 'no comment' and while many were creeped out by what happened, they're also mad for the families whose ancestors remains were stolen.

"Oh man they'd be in the next mausoleum," one resident said.

People were hoping that police won't rest until the remains are returned to their final resting place.
