Caught On Camera: Garden City Teen Robbed At Gunpoint In Broad Daylight

GARDEN CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A frightening crime was caught on camera on a busy street in Garden City.

A teenager was held up at gunpoint in broad daylight.

As TV 10/55's Carolyn Gusoff reported, surveillance cameras were rolling on Second Street, as a teen in a red hoodie and backpack with ear buds in is approached from behind.

Moments later, the man in a baseball cap with a covered face asked the teen the time and then pulled a gun, pressing it against the teen's side as he ordered him to hand over everything.

The robbery took place on a busy street with cars passing and unaware homeowners just steps away.

"That's worrisome," one resident said.

Garden City police released a video hoping to catch the gunman wearing a black and white jacket.

The victim, an 18-year-old intern was walking home last Tuesday morning from his job. His boss called it a crime of opportunity.

Residents of the apartment complex that just installed high def cameras never expected them to be immediately put to use.

"It's never happened before. We have a very secure street and complex," William Keegan said.

The gunman ran off with the victim's cash, phone, and valuables after ordering the teen to keep walking and not look back.

Women who work and park near here say they plan to walk in pairs with their headphones off.

"You gotta be alert, no matter where you are these days. It doesn't matter if you're in the best neighborhood or the worst neighborhood. You never know what's coming around the corner. It's very scary," one resident said.

Garden City police said there have been no similar incidents in the neighborhood and are hoping that someone will recognize the perpetrator and contact them.
