Best Of Mike Francesa: Cubs Finally Win World Series

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Mike Francesa opened his show on Nov. 3, 2016, discussing the World Series' thrilling Game 7 the night before.

Francesa said he believes there were two key moments in the Cubs' 8-7, 10-inning victory over the Indians that may have been overlooked.

"One was (Aroldis) Chapman pitching the ninth inning was unbelievable because that's where the Indians had to win the game," Francesa said. "Because they didn't have a pitcher to go out for the 10th inning to battle the middle of that lineup. So that was heroic, heroic for him. As bad as he was last night (in the eighth inning), that was as heroic an inning as you can have on fumes. Throwing sliders in the 80s on fumes.

"The other was the tag-up (from first to second base by the Cubs' Albert Almora Jr.). The tag-up set up the entire (10th) inning. He went in there to pinch run. Not three guys out of a hundred would have tagged up on that ball. They would have been around second base. He tagged up. He was confident he was going the whole way. He knew exactly what he did. He tracked the baseball. He knew he wasn't going to be caught. And that tag-up set up the whole inning."

Francesa, however, said the Cubs won despite some "bizarre" decision by manager Joe Maddon.

"He won a World Series, but other managers must have been just, 'Are you kidding me?' watching this guy manage the game," Francesa said. "He made some of the most unbelievable, just craziest stuff ... including taking (Kyle) Hendricks out, who was just dominant."

Francesa said a big story line of the series was how the pitchers who dominated in earlier games had run out of gas by the finale.

"The bottom line is to do it throughout the entire series and have the stamina to keep doing it is what's special," he said. "(Corey) Kluber had nothing last night. (Andrew) Miller had nothing last night. Chapman had nothing last night. They had given you everything they had in the series. They didn't have anything left to give you. That's what it came down to."
