Retired NYPD Detective Shoots 2 Robbery Suspects In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A retired NYPD detective shot and wounded two suspects who attempted to rob her after a concert in Newark, police said.

The 43-year-old mother of two, who retired nine months ago, went to a concert with her teenage daughter Thursday night at the Prudential Center.

Around 9:30 p.m., they were getting into their car at Commerce Street and McCarter Highway, when two men approached with a gun and demanded money, Newark police said.

Police later discovered the gun was a fake, but the former detective wasn't taking any chances with her daughter's safety at risk, CBS2's Ali Bauman reported. She fired her weapon and shot the suspects, police said.

After 23 years with the NYPD, the former officer said she never fired her gun once.

The suspects fled after being shot, but were apprehended by Newark officers, police said.

The suspects, 22-year-old Tahje Hunt and 27-year-old Brian Moore, were taken arrested and charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and conspiracy, police said.

They were both taken to University Hospital in Newark with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The officer and her daughter are recovering at home.
