Student From Toms River, N.J. Vanishes From University Of Maryland

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- There was a mystery on the University of Maryland campus Monday, after a student from New Jersey vanished.

As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, Kaitlyn George, 21, is from Toms River, New Jersey. She grew up in a house on Indian Hill Road, and neighbors called her the rock of her family as the oldest of four sisters.

They just could not imagine where she had gone. She was last seen on the campus where she was studying.

"They are wonderful, wonderful girls," one neighbor said. "So I just hope what's ever going on, and that they find her."

Police said George may be in Baltimore. A taxi driver confirmed she got picked up on campus and was taken to Baltimore City and dropped off at a marina this past Thursday.

In surveillance video, George is seen carrying a large hiking backpack and a pink bag. Her family said she was planning on going camping with her boyfriend, but never showed up.

"Our biggest concern is we just want to make sure she's OK," said University of Maryland police Sgt. Roseanne Hoaas.

Police were unable to trace George's phone, and she does not have a car. Missing posters with images of the college student were plastered around the campus and on social media.

"Everyone's kind of freaking out," said Tyler Rockhill. "We're really trying to find her."

Neighbors on George's cul-de-sac in Toms River were emotional in talking about her.

"They lost their dad many years ago in terrible accident, and Janet did fabulous job raising those girls," a neighbor said. "So I just hope they find her."

George is described as 5 feet 3 inches tall and 120 pounds, with blond hair and hazel eyes. She was last seen wearing a jacket and black leggings.
