School Bus Driver Dies After Fiery Crash In New Jersey

COLTS NECK, N.J (CBSNewYork) -- The driver of a school bus died after the bus collided head-on with an SUV and burst into flames in New Jersey on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the bus was traveling west on Phalanx Road in Colts Neck shortly before 2:30 p.m., when it collided with a 2004 Dodge Durango.

The 16-passenger school bus, owned by Helfrich & Sons, of Keansburg, then caught fire.

The driver, a school bus aide and one student were on board, police said.

They were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where the driver died and the others were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The road was scattered with debris and the bus was badly burnt with its roof and sides gone, CBS2's Jessica Layton reported.
