Brother, Sister Struck When SUV Jumps Curb On Upper West Side
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A brother and sister were rushed to a hospital after an SUV jumped a curb and struck them on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
The sound of the initial crash sent neighbors racing to see what happened outside 41 W. 96th St. near Columbus Avenue just before lunchtime, CBS2's Jessica Layton reported.
"I heard the screech, guy across the corner say 'dial 911,' and I saw them on the ground," resident Ray McGonigle said.
Having worked as a doorman in the building for 10 years, McGonigle said he immediately recognized the victims hurt on the sidewalk as a brother and sister in their 50s and 60s.
"I saw his head was bleeding, she was crushed. Somebody put a tourniquet on the leg," he said.
Witnesses said the 77-year-old driver of a small silver sport-utility vehicle was trying to park when she first hit a maroon colored van, then jumped the curb, plowing through pedestrians and pinning the 63-year-old woman against a wall.
"I feel devastated, praying they get well soon," the building's superintendent, Santiago Garcia, said.
Garcia said the siblings, who own the van and Josef Traffic Consulting Services, are kind people who are well known in the building.
"I came in here in '87 and they were already here," he said.
Now those who know them are hoping they pull through and come home soon.
