Wayne State University Police Officer Shot In Detroit; Person Of Interest In Custody

DETROIT (CBSNewYork/CBS Detroit/AP) -- A Wayne State University police officer was shot and wounded in Detroit Tuesday night, police said.

A person of interest was later taken into custody.

The officer was shot in the head around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday after stopping a person on a bicycle along Lincoln and Brainard streets in Detroit, near the Motor City Casino, CBS Detroit reported.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig told reporters in the area on Tuesday night that the five-year police veteran was shot once and was left in critical condition. He was in surgery late Tuesday at DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, police officials said.

Craig said the officer was on patrol when he radioed in and said he was investigating possible thefts from cars. The officer said he was going to speak to someone.

Officers who arrived on the scene found the officer injured on the ground.

A bicycle was also lying in the middle of the street, Detroit Police Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt told CBS Detroit.

Dolunt could not tell CBS Detroit whether the officer was shot with his own gun.

Officers late Tuesday took a person of interest – Deangelo Lamarr Davis, 31 – into custody, Michigan State Police said via Twitter.

Craig noted that four officers were shot around the country over the weekend, calling it a "very dangerous" time for officers.

A San Antonio detective was fatally shot, and a St. Louis officer was shot twice in the face but survived.

Police officers were also shot and injured during traffic stops in Sanibel, Florida, and Gladstone, Missouri, on Sunday night, but authorities have not suggested those were targeted attacks.

One-third of police officers shot to death on the job this year were purposely targeted by their assailant, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
