Bronx Man In Custody After Threatening Woman On Subway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A Bronx woman is lucky she wasn't hurt after a stranger threatened her with a gun on the subway early Saturday morning.

The unidentified 23-year-old woman boarded a northbound number 2 train at Times Square around 3:00 a.m.

As the train approached the West 72nd Street station, 29-year-old Sharif Mitchel approached and sat next to her. According to police, Mitchel began to compliment the woman and started to touch her right leg against her wishes.

When the female asked him to stop, Mitchel removed a black firearm from his waistband and pointed it at the victim, according to police.

He then demanded she get off the train with him when they reached the East 149th Street station, to which she refused, according to police.

Before Mitchel exited the train, the victim noticed a Playboy bunny tattoo on the left side of his neck, according to police.

The female exited the train at the Intervale Avenue station along with two female good Samaritans who called police on her behalf.

After a description was broadcast over police scanners, Mitchel was stopped on the 2600 block of 3rd Avenue by police officers.

The victim quickly identified Mitchel as the individual responsible for the incident on the subway, and he was place under arrest without incident.

According to police, a Hi-point .380 caliber handgun was recovered from Mitchel's front pants pocket and a loaded magazine was recovered from his rear pants pocket.

Mitchel is being charged with stalking, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, menacing, and harassment.

Police tell CBS2 that Mitchel has 30 prior arrests, some of which include assault, robbery, and menacing.
