Person Struck, Killed By Amtrak Train In Edison, N.J.; Service Delayed For Hours
EDISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Amtrak service was delayed for hours late Sunday after a person was struck and killed by a train in Edison, New Jersey.
Around 7:20 p.m., the victim was struck by Amtrak Acela service Train No. 2262, which was headed from Washington, D.C. to Boston, according to Amtrak. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Bad situation – it's terrible; it's real horrible," said Toria Shelton.
Shelton told CBS2's Jessica Layton she knew something was wrong when she was dropped off at the train station in Edison. There were flashing police lights, a white sheet on the train tracks -- and confused passengers on the platform.
"They said that somebody jumped in front of the train, so it's going to be a long wait," Shelton said.
Authorities late Sunday were not confirming why the person was on the tracks.
The train was held at the station for two and a half hours for investigation. It resumed service and headed to Penn Station at 9:50 p.m., police said.
Amtrak said two additional tracks remained open and trains went on moving, but service was delayed. Residual delays persisted for some time afterward.
But people like Lawrence Baltimore trying to get to work said the train delays were nothing compared to a death.
"I feel so bad for the family, whoever it is," said Baltimore, of Piscataway, New Jersey. "It's terrible."
The person who was struck was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The train will be inspected by authorities now that it is back in New York.
