NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- With a puff of air and tweet of the whistle, the New York City Transit Museum's "Nostalgia Train" comes to life for the holiday season.

The historic train will take riders along the Second Avenue line between Lower Manhattan and Queens Plaza every Sunday until the week before Christmas -- all for the price of a standard MetroCard swipe.

"This is amazing -- history in motion," one commuter told WCBS 880's Todd Glickman.

One man told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern he remembers the old train cars well.

"Riveted sides, rattan seats, the big paddle fans, incandescent bulbs, kind of dim lighting," he said.

The eight-car train ran on the lettered lines from the 1930s to the 1970s.

For those looking to take a ride, here's the complete schedule, as provided by the MTA:

Leaving Second Avenue
10:01 a.m.
11:31 a.m.
1:01 p.m.
2:30 p.m.
4:01 p.m.

Leaving Queens Plaza
10:44 a.m.
12:14 p.m.
1:43 p.m.
3:14 p.m.
4:44 p.m.

The train is lovingly restored by volunteers, and can be viewed all year-round at the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn.

Commuters can also take a ride on several vintage buses hitting Manhattan roadways in early December.
