Livery Cab Driver Found Shot Dead After Crash In Orange

ORANGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A livery cab driver was shot and killed in Orange, New Jersey, authorities said.

Police responded to a report of an accident on Snyder Street, which remained littered with debris more than 12 hours after the livery cab slammed into two trees and a fence around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Marc, who did not give his last name, said he heard two shots and then the crash, which destroyed his car that was parked in his driveway.

"I'm still in shock, my car is totaled, I have no vehicle," said Marc. "This is a shock to me. Until now I'm still in shock, I still don't know what to think."

When officers arrived at the crash scene, they discovered the driver, 55-year-old Jonas Larose of East Orange, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, authorities said. Larose was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors said the street is generally safe and quiet, and now they're worried.

"Not too long ago a little boy just got shot on Cleveland, and now here on the block," one woman said. "This is too close to home."

Authorities have not released information about a motive or a suspect.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Essex County Prosecutor's Tips Line at (877) 847-7432.
