Cops In Connecticut, Westchester Search For Suspects In Interstate Burglary Spree

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- People were on alert Friday, after a burglary spree with suspects targeting homeowners from Westchester to Connecticut.

As CBS2's Lou Young reported, the pattern was identified by police in Stamford, now authorities are hunting for what appears to be an interstate gang of home burglars.

Police said neighborhoods in North Stamford are a hunting ground for home burglars who are quick and efficient.

"It's hit and run, it's us, it's towns in Fairfield, and Westchester County as well," Sgt. Sean Scanlon, Stamford Police, said.

There have been a string of a half-dozen break-ins in Stamford. Cops believe they may be linked to others in New Canaan, Westport, Harrison, and Mamaroneck.

One Stamford resident recalled a typical broad daylight job that nobody saw happening.

"Didn't see them, they went in the back window, smashed in the back window and took all the electronics and computers, laptops," Candy Knott said, "I was next door, my dog was in."

The loot is valuable, but always easy to carry: jewelry, electronics, cash -- if there is any. They come and go through the backyards, and leave the area in a vehicle parked nearby.

Cops think they're using the parkway.

"Merrit's only one mile up the street; High Ridge Road, jump on and go in either direction," Rich Boldrighini said, "It's an escape route."

"We definitely have six that we know are the same exact MO here in Stamford, but in the whole county and surrounding states it could be 20, 30 or more," Scanlon said.

In every instance the residents were not home, but police said it's only a matter of time before they make a mistake. Hopefully one that leads to arrests, rather than a confrontation with a victim.

With the holidays upon us, police caution extra care when storing gifts and urge the use of burglary alarms.
