Study Finds And Quantifies Pokemon GO’s Positive Fitness Benefits

NEW YORK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) —Other than the designed function for Pokemon GO of literally playing the fun game, there are peripheral benefits to playing. The real life movement has users traversing distance and staying active without being aware that it’s congruent with an active lifestyle.

Outside of the loud minority of those racking up real life injuries due to being negligent of everything outside of the screen, Pokemon GO has gotten more people out and about more successfully than any other video game has. Now there’s a study to back it up.

A study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research has found that because of the game, Americans took 144 billion more steps in the first month succeeding the game’s release. 144 billion is, in the highest of scientific terms, very, very, very many steps.

Since then, though, the fad has flared out a bit. When it first hit the market this summer, it seemed everyone hopped on the bandwagon. Not long after that first month is when the average person moved onto the next thing.

Those who have continued to play it obviously continue to benefit from the excess physical activity that they wouldn’t get from watching TV or playing other games.
