Woman Who Died In NYPD Custody Was Driving While On Drugs, Police Say

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 34-year-old woman died in police custody Thursday night.

The NYPD said officers arrested the woman for driving while intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs around 4:35 p.m. Thursday.

She was taken to Staten Island University Hospital North for evaluation, police said. She was treated before being taken to the 120 Precinct on Staten Island, where she was placed in a lodging cell.

Police said the woman was later found unconscious and unresponsive, EMS responded and pronounced her dead.

An investigation is underway. The woman's identity was not released.
