Tri-State Area Faces Deep Freeze; Long Island To Open Warming Center

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Arctic air will plunge temperatures around the Tri-State area.

The bitter cold will start spreading into the region late Wednesday night.

Wind gusts of up to 50 mph are possible during the day Thursday, and could go as high as 60 mph at night. The wind chill could be near zero for many parts of the area and approach minus 15 degrees in higher elevations such as Sussex County, New Jersey.

"I invite neighbors who don't have enough heat to seek shelter at one of the town's 16 warming centers," Town Supervisor Anthony Santino said. "Freezing temperatures can be dangerous for everyone, especially seniors, who may have a hard time regulating their body temperature and staying warm."

In upstate New York, some schools and government offices are closing early ahead of another round of lake-effect snow storms expected to dump 1 to 2 feet of snow on parts of the region.

The National Weather Service has issued lake-effect snow warnings for a five-county area in western New York and a three-county region near Lake Ontario's eastern end. The storms started Wednesday afternoon and will continue into Thursday morning, dumping more than a foot of snow south of Buffalo and as much as 2 feet in the Tug Hill region north of Syracuse.
