Video: Officer Stops New Jersey Man Accused Of Driving Backhoe While Drunk

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New Jersey man who police say was driving drunk while behind the wheel of a backhoe is facing charges.

A South Brunswick officer stopped William Campbell, 56, of Franklin Park, on Tuesday after police said they received calls about a man driving a backhoe on New Road while "drinking beer and swerving all over the road."

Police dash cam video showed the backhoe drifting back and forth in the lane and onto the shoulder.

The officer apparently smelled alcohol on Campbell's breath and found bottles of Jack Daniels and vodka in the backhoe.

Campbell failed a field sobriety test and admitted to the officer that he didn't have a valid license, police said.

Campbell is charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving and failing to maintain a lane among other offenses.

"The callers alerted us to this driver and an officer was in the area immediately," Chief Raymond Hayducka said. "The actions of the caller and officer took this impaired driver off the road before anyone was harmed."

Campbell has seven prior DWI convictions dating back to 1980. It's unclear if he has an attorney who can comment on the charges.

Campbell is due in court next month.
