Jaguars GM Says He Wants To Talk To Coughlin About Coaching Vacancy

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (CBSNewYork) -- Could Tom Coughlin be returning to Jacksonville to coach the Jaguars next season?

Jacksonville general manager David Caldwell said Monday the team is interested in talking to Coughlin. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported that there are "rumblings" that there is mutual interest.

"Tom's a great man, a great person, and we'll see how it goes," Caldwell said. "There'll be a lot of people we'll be interested in talking to."

The Jaguars (2-12) fired head coach Gus Bradley on Sunday. Offensive line coach Doug Marrone has been named the interim head coach.

Coughlin coached the expansion Jaguars from 1995-2002, leading the team to the AFC championship game in just its second season. He then spent 2004-15 with the Giants, where he won two Super Bowls.

He resigned after last season, the franchise's third straight losing campaign and fourth consecutive year without a playoff appearance.

In 20 seasons, Coughlin has a record of 170-150. He ranks 14th all-time in the NFL in wins.

Coughlin currently serves as the NFL's senior adviser to football operations, but the 70-year-old has made it clear he hopes to coach again. He interviewed last season for the Philadelphia Eagles' and San Francisco 49ers' head coaching vacancies.
