Former Carpet Factory Goes Up In Flames In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Firefighters continue to put out hot spots at an early morning fire that ripped through a former carpet factory turned artist colony in Yonkers on Monday.

The fire broke out at the former Alexander Smith carpet factory at the intersection of Nepperhan and Lake Avenues. When firefighters arrived, flames were already coming out of the windows of the building's top three floors.

"There is quite a bit of damage," Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Fitzpatrick said. "The men did a nice job here to stop the extension. There's still extensive damage, both fire, structural and water damage."

The former factory had been converted into small businesses and artist lofts. Fitzpatrick said there were no serious injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Yonkers Fire Commissioner Robert Sweeney said the blaze is suspicious because it started in the early morning when no one was there, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.

Several road closures are in effect around the scene of the fire.
Nepperhan Avenue is closed in both directions from Torre Place to Axminster. Southbound Nepperhan Avenue may be open later Monday. Saw Mill River Road is also closed from Palmer Road to Ashburton Avenue.

The Board of Education and the Westchester County Bee Line have been notified of the closures.
