NJ TRANSIT Train Delays Remain After Truck Pulls Down Wires In Matawan
MATAWAN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Commuters were trapped Friday, on an NJ TRANSIT train for nearly two hours.
It happened when a dump truck caused wires to fall in Matawan, as CBS2's Raegan Medgie reported, it had a ripple effect down the lines.
"It lit up like Christmas, so much lighting from the power line falling," JB Butler said.
About 125 people were stuck aboard train #3232 to New York's Penn Station outside of Matawan due to the downed wires.
A truck slammed into a pole and pulled the wires down west of Matawan station around 10 a.m., according to NJ TRANSIT.
The train had to stop between stations.
"I got the 9:31 from Middletown to New York, then we got to Aberdeen and it just stopped. The electric just went off," Bob Mele said.
"We came to a dead stop, were there for about two hours, I missed my train to Florida, so I'm headed back home," Pamela Waybright said.
Transit officials said the wires help provide power to the train. On Friday, crew members were busy working on the wires to make sure both tracks were up and running.
Train service had been restored in both directions, but with delays.
The dump truck driver was ticketed for careless driving.
