Nassau County Police Release Detailed Description Of Young Man Found Dead In Popular Massapequa Park

MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Long Island police need help identifying a victim found dead in a popular Nassau County Park.

On Thursday afternoon, the body of the unidentified young man was found inside the Peter Schmitt Massapequa Preserve near Seaview Avenue and Ocean Avenue.

"While walking a dog, a resident of the area discovered the body of a younger male which was lying in the woods," Nassau County Police Det. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said.

The man who discovered the victim's body Thursday immediately called 911 and police began an extensive search of the 432-acre park.

Police released a sketch Saturday of the victim. They believe his body was in Massapequa Preserve Park for two to three weeks, and are trying to figure out who he is and why someone would brutally beat him to death.

"During the examination at the Medical Examiner's Office, it had been discovered that the victim had sustained multiple lacerations and blunt force trauma to the upper body and head," Fitzpatrick said. "These injuries appear to be from a large cutting instrument."

The victim, described as Hispanic in his late teens or early 20's, was last seen wearing a black, long sleeved American Eagle shirt like the one pictured above. The sketch provided police shows he had a distinct haircut, long on the top with shorter sides. Authorities say he was around 5'3" and 120 pounds.

Police say nobody has come forward since word of the gruesome discovery got out.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
